12-Day Self-Drive Itinerary

Day 1: Windhoek to the Kalahari Desert

Drive south from Windhoek to the red dunes of the Kalahari. Your tent is already set up when you arrive. Watch the sunset and the stars.

Overnight: Kalahari Anib Camping2Go

Days 2 and 3: Kalahari to the Namib Desert

Drive to the Namib Desert, one of the oldest deserts in the world. Visit Sossusvlei, Deadvlei and Dune 45 at your own pace. Stay two nights and watch the stars each evening.

Overnight: Namib Desert Camping2Go

Days 4 and 5: Namib Desert to Swakopmund

Drive west to Swakopmund on the Atlantic coast. Walk the town to see its German colonial streets, cafés and shops. Visit Walvis Bay Lagoon for flamingos. Optional coastal activities are available.

Overnight: Brigadoon Guesthouse

Day 6: Swakopmund to Spitzkoppe

Drive inland to Spitzkoppe, a group of granite peaks often called the “Matterhorn of Namibia.” See San rock art and the rock formations. Spitzkoppe is a good place for sunset photos and stargazing.

Overnight: Spitzkoppe Cabin Camps

Days 7 and 8: Spitzkoppe to Damaraland

Drive to Damaraland. Visit Twyfelfontein, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with ancient rock engravings. Look for desert-adapted elephants along the dry riverbeds.

Overnight: Camp Isa

Day 9: Damaraland to Palmwag Conservancy

Drive north to the Palmwag Conservancy, a remote desert wilderness. Look for desert-adapted wildlife around the camp.

Overnight: Palmwag Camping2Go

Days 10 and 11: Palmwag to Etosha National Park

Drive to Etosha National Park, Namibia’s main wildlife park. Self-drive at your own pace and stop at the waterholes. Look for elephants, lions, rhinos, giraffes, zebras and plains game.

Overnight: Etosha Safari Camping2Go

Day 12: Etosha to Windhoek

Eat breakfast and drive back to Windhoek. Return the 4×4, then go to Hosea Kutako International Airport for your onward flight.
