12-Day Self-Drive Itinerary
Day 1: Windhoek to Okonjima Nature Reserve
Drive north from Windhoek to Okonjima Nature Reserve. Set up your rooftop tent at the campsite.
Optional activities include tracking rehabilitated big cats and learning about the reserve’s conservation work.
Overnight: Okonjima Campsite
Days 2 and 3: Okonjima to Etosha National Park
Drive to Etosha National Park, one of Africa’s main wildlife parks. Self-drive at your own pace and stop at the waterholes. Look for elephants, lions, rhinos, giraffes and zebras.
Overnight: Tamboti Campsite
Day 4: Etosha National Park
Spend another day in Etosha National Park. Visit more waterholes and keep watching for wildlife.
Overnight: Okaukuejo Camp Site
Days 5 and 6: Etosha to Damaraland
Drive south-west into Damaraland and the Mowani area. Visit Twyfelfontein, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with ancient rock engravings. At night, watch the stars from your campsite.
Overnight: Mowani Campsite
Day 7: Damaraland to Spitzkoppe
Drive to Spitzkoppe, a group of granite peaks often called the “Matterhorn of Namibia.” See San rock art and the granite formations. Watch the stars in the evening.
Overnight: Spitzkoppe Campsite
Days 8 and 9: Spitzkoppe to Swakopmund
Drive to Swakopmund on the Atlantic coast. Walk the town to see its German colonial buildings, cafés and shops. Visit Walvis Bay Lagoon for flamingos. Optional coastal activities are available.
Overnight: Brigadoon Guesthouse
Days 10 and 11: Swakopmund to the Namib Desert
Drive south into the Namib Desert. Visit Sossusvlei, Deadvlei and Dune 45 at your own pace. Watch the sunset over the dunes and the stars at night.
Overnight: Namib Desert Campsite
Day 12: Namib Desert to Windhoek
Spend a last morning in the Namib Desert. Then drive back to Windhoek for your onward flight or transfer.
