13-Day Self-Drive Itinerary

Day 1: Windhoek to Okonjima Nature Reserve

Drive north from Windhoek to Okonjima Nature Reserve. Join an optional big cat tracking activity or relax at the camp.

Overnight: Okonjima Plains Camp

Days 2 and 3: Okonjima to Etosha National Park (East)

Drive to the eastern side of Etosha National Park. The waterholes here draw elephants, lions, giraffes, rhinos and many antelope. Self-drive at your own pace and look out over the Etosha Pan.

Overnight: Mokuti Lodge

Day 4: Etosha National Park (South)

Drive west through Etosha to the southern side. Stop at the waterholes and open plains along the way. Spend the evening at the lodge.

Overnight: Etosha Safari Lodge

Day 5: Etosha to Palmwag Conservancy

Drive west to the Palmwag Conservancy, a remote wilderness area. Look for desert-adapted elephants and other desert wildlife.

Overnight: Palmwag Lodge

Days 6 and 7: Palmwag to Damaraland

Drive south into Damaraland. Visit Twyfelfontein, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its ancient rock engravings. See the Organ Pipes rock formation.

Overnight: Twyfelfontein Country Lodge

Day 8: Damaraland to the Erongo Mountains

Drive to the Erongo Mountains. Take a guided walk among the granite boulders and enjoy the views over the plains.

Overnight: Hohenstein Lodge

Days 9 and 10: Erongo Mountains to Swakopmund

Drive to Swakopmund on the Atlantic coast. Visit Walvis Bay Lagoon for flamingos and other coastal birds. Walk the town to see its German colonial buildings.

Optional activities include dolphin cruises, desert tours and scenic flights.

Overnight: Strand Hotel

Days 11 and 12: Swakopmund to the Namib Desert

Drive south into the Namib Desert, home to some of the highest dunes in the world. Go out early to Sossusvlei and Deadvlei and see the red dunes change colour in the morning light. Watch the sunset over the desert.

Overnight: Le Mirage Lodge

Day 13: Namib Desert to Windhoek

Eat breakfast at the lodge. Then drive back to Windhoek for your onward flight.

Travel in the Green Season

The Green Season runs from November to April. Rain turns the land green and wildlife gives birth. Parks are quieter and prices are lower. It is a good time for photos.
