12-Day Self-Drive Itinerary

Day 1: Windhoek to the Kalahari Desert

Drive south from Windhoek to the red dunes and grasslands of the Kalahari. Join a guided sunset nature drive or relax at the lodge.

Overnight: Kalahari Anib Lodge

Days 2 and 3: Kalahari to the Namib Desert

Drive to the Namib Desert, the oldest desert in the world. Visit Sossusvlei and Deadvlei. Climb a dune at sunrise for views over the desert.

Spend the afternoons at the lodge pool.

Overnight: Le Mirage Lodge

Days 4 and 5: Namib Desert to Swakopmund

Drive west to Swakopmund on the Atlantic coast. Walk the seafront promenade and see the German colonial buildings. Visit Walvis Bay Lagoon for flamingos and other birds.

Optional activities include Skeleton Coast scenic flights, dolphin cruises and desert tours.

Overnight: Strand Hotel Swakopmund

Days 6 and 7: Swakopmund to Damaraland

Drive north to Damaraland. Visit Twyfelfontein, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with ancient rock engravings. Look for desert-adapted elephants. Watch the sunset from the lodge, which sits among granite boulders.

Overnight: Mowani Mountain Camp

Day 8: Damaraland to Etosha National Park (South)

Drive to Etosha National Park, Namibia’s main wildlife park. Spend the afternoon at the waterholes. Look for rhinos, lions, zebras and elephants.

Overnight: Etosha Safari Lodge

Days 9 and 10: Etosha National Park (East)

Drive east through Etosha to the Mokuti Lodge area. Spend two days on self-drive game drives. Optional guided game drives are available. Look for elephants, lions, giraffes, rhinos and plains game.

Overnight: Mokuti Lodge

Day 11: Etosha to Okonjima Nature Reserve

Drive south from Etosha to Okonjima Nature Reserve. Join an afternoon or evening wildlife activity. Learn about the reserve’s conservation work and track some of Namibia’s big cats.

Overnight: Okonjima Plains Camp

Day 12: Okonjima to Windhoek

Take an optional nature or wildlife activity in the morning. Then drive back to Windhoek, return your vehicle and go to the airport for your onward flight.

The Green Season runs from November to April. Rain turns the land green and wildlife gives birth. Parks are quieter and prices are lower. It is a good time for photos.
